कंप्यूटर तीन काम करता है — पहला, आपसे जानकारी लेता है (Input); दूसरा, उस पर काम करता है (Processing); और तीसरा, नतीजा आपको देता है (Output)। इसी छोटे-से चक्र में पूरा कंप्यूटर विज्ञान छिपा है।
"Computer" शब्द लैटिन भाषा के "Computare" से बना है, जिसका मतलब होता है — गणना करना। यानी शुरुआत में कंप्यूटर सिर्फ़ हिसाब-किताब के लिए बना था। आज यही मशीन फ़िल्म बनाती है, रॉकेट उड़ाती है और आपकी जेब में मोबाइल बनकर बैठी है।
