पैगंबर हजरत मोहम्मद साहब का जन्म लगभग 570 ईस्वी में अरब के मक्का नगर में कुरैश कबीले में हुआ था। चालीस वर्ष की आयु में हिरा गुफा में उन्हें प्रथम दिव्य संदेश प्राप्त हुआ, जिसके बाद उन्होंने एकेश्वरवाद का प्रचार आरंभ किया। मक्का में विरोध बढ़ने पर सन 622 में वे मदीना चले गए और इसी प्रस्थान को हिजरत कहा जाता है, जिससे इस्लामी हिजरी संवत का प्रारंभ होता है। सन 632 में मदीना में ही उनका देहांत हुआ। मक्का में स्थित काबा इस्लाम का सबसे पवित्र स्थल है।
